The Cobblestone Society: 1409 W Morse Ave, Chicago, IL 60626-3481, United States
Date: Wednesday November 11th
Duration: 6.30 pm – 8.30 pm, with an artist/curator’s presentation at 7.00 pm
Join us for a pop-up gallery exhibition and book launch of Tony Wolf’s Make Believe project, a collection of assemblage artworks representing the shrines, altars and other artefacts of nine fictional religions.
From the clandestine folk-religion of an imaginary Caribbean island to the avant-garde, neo-Shinto veneration of “electrical cats” in postwar Japan; from mythopoetic feminist self-initiation at the turn of the 20th century to early Internet gnosis to the funerary rites of a far-future Californian culture, Make Believe challenges the very notion of what religions are and can be.
Our host venue is the Cobblestone Society, a new community arts and gathering space next door to the Malliway Bros. store on Morse Avenue in Rogers Park. Doors open at 6:30 pm and there will be a brief presentation by the artist/curator at 7 pm. Light refreshments will be served.
